Chapter Nineteen

When I woke, I felt a newfound confidence in mending the bridge between Sara and myself. I quickly dressed for the day, slicking my hair back and admiring myself in the mirror before going to the kitchen. I wanted to look my absolute best for her tonight. Hopefully, it would help me with my apology and convince her to wait a little longer for me to get her out of here and back to the US.

When I arrived at the kitchen, I found Callie was already organizing the ingredients collected for the mole, frowning at the contents. I approached her side, smiling at the colorful peppers, nuts, and spices.

“Did you manage to find everything we needed?” I asked, looking back at the cook. Her brow was pulling together as she measured out different ingredients, stopping her movements at the sound of my voice.

“They put chocolate on their chicken,” she groaned, looking up at me with confusion. “I know that other cultures have their ways and that many of ours may be odd to outsiders, but chocolate chicken?”

I looked down at the gathered ingredients and chuckled with amusement at Callie’s flustered expression. “I wouldn’t know anything about that. I still remember before you humans used any seasonings at all.”

Callie snorted and shook her head, looking down at the lit-up screen of her phone, inspecting the recipe yet again. She had always taken pride in her cooking, and I held no doubt that she would help me to be as authentic as possible with this dish for Sara.

“Well,” she sighed, “let’s get started then. According to this recipe, it will take about 2 hours to complete.”

She tossed me an extra apron, moving around the kitchen to gather bowls and pans to prepare the food. The apron was relatively small for me, decorated with tiny lace in the shapes of flowers, but I accepted it willingly. I smiled, tied the apron on, and following the orders, Callie barked at me.

A couple of times, I couldn’t help but laugh at myself, retrieving pots and pans at Callie’s beck and call. Never in my life would I have ever thought I’d find myself following the orders of a human or cooking for one, for that matter. The entire scene was absurd, especially as much as I was beginning to enjoy it, imagining the look on Sara’s face when she received the meal we had prepared just for her.

Every time the door to the kitchen opened, I would look up, ensuring it wasn’t Sara. I didn’t want to ruin the surprise, yet each time it wasn’t her, I could feel a slight squeeze in my heart, a second part of me wanting her to walk through the door and see how hard I was working for her. Perhaps a bit selfish of me, but I couldn’t help the feeling even if I tried. I wanted her to know how hard I worked for her forgiveness. Just as she had said, her father did for her mother.
